Theoretical Foundations for Designing the Organizational Structure of a Railway Company: Management Specifics and Efficiency Methodology
Abstract
The article examines the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of managing the organizational structure of a transport company, using the Main Computing Center—a branch of Russian Railways (JSC "RZD")—as a case study. It systematizes the understanding of organizational structure as a fundamental management category and a key element of organizational design, demonstrating that such a structure must adapt to the phases of a company’s life cycle and shifts in the external environment. Furthermore, the article highlights specific management characteristics inherent to the railway transport sector, including its status as a natural monopoly, a rigid vertical hierarchy, a priority on operational safety, and a high degree of formal regulation.
